Matthew 5:1-12

Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him,and he began to teach them.

He said:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

The message of the cross turns everything the right way up.

Today’s passage is the introduction to the collection of Jesus’ teaching which has come to be known as ‘The Sermon on the Mount. It appears to be about a new way of living which is hard or even impossible to maintain.

But there is more… Think about what Jesus went through in the hours leading up to his death on the cross. What we have here in the beatitudes is an outline of Jesus’ sufferings. He was meek because he did not answer back when he was mocked and tortured. He was merciful to the onlookers who insulted him. He was persecuted because of righteousness.

And then there is even more… Jesus’ suffering and death were the means by which the kingdom of heaven came to earth. (The kingdom of heaven is the same thing as the kingdom of God.) So now, people whose sins have been forgiven can live differently. As we live out the values of the beatitudes in our daily lives the kingdom of God comes on earth as it is in heaven.

Have a great day!
