This morning, we continue our devotions looking at what a Spirit Filled Church looks like. If you missed Pastor Michael Jarvis’ message on Sunday, it is now available on the church web site to listen to.

A Spirit-Filled Church Has Deliberate Dependance

1 Corinthians 2 v 1 – 5

And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power. Our reliance is on the supernatural work of God and not our competencies, resources, and experiences. It is very easy to rely upon your own abilities and not attempt anything outside of those abilities. A Spirit Filled Church is a place of faith where there is a reliance upon the supernatural work of God. A Spirit Filled Church is a place where the Fruit of the Spirit is seen in people’s characters and the Gifts of the Spirit are at work in people’s lives. The Bible encourages us to desire the Gifts of the Spirit as described in the following passage as well as other passages.

1 Corinthians 12 v 1 – 11

Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

Prayer – Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you that we do not have to rely upon our own strength and that in our weakness your strength is displayed. We pray that you will allow the Fruit of the Spirit to be evident in our lives and use us in the Gifts of the Spirit that your church might be encouraged and built up. Amen

Have a great day!
