Ephesians 5:18-20

Living by the Spirit’s Power

15 So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise.16 Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. 17 Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. 18 Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,19 singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. 20 And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Colossians 3:16-17

16 Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.17 And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.

Both of today’s passages are in the context of living lives for God. Ephesians talks about living by the Spirit’s power and Colossians talks about living the new life. Both passages talk about things we’d expect when it comes to growing as disciples:

  • Let the message of Christ fill your life
  • Be careful how you live
  • Be wise, have wise counsel, don’t be foolish
  • Do what the Lord wants you to do
  • Give thanks to God in your life
  • In everything you do, you are representing Jesus

But how often do we associate singing and making music as equally important in growing as a disciple?

Today, sing psalms, spiritual songs, make music and bring your worship to God
