This morning we continue our Daily Devotions on the life of David.
2 Samuel 16, 17 & 18 to v 18
In today’s reading, the battle between David and Absalom continues and gathers momentum. It ends with Absalom’s death, hanging from an Oak Tree. It is interesting how today’s reading finishes:
During his lifetime Absalom had taken a pillar and erected it in the King’s Valley as a monument to himself, for he thought, “I have no son to carry on the memory of my name.” He named the pillar after himself, and it is called Absalom’s Monument to this day.
I think that about sums up Absalom’s attitude. The person sitting on the throne in Absalom’s heart was Absalom. This Sunday, we conclude our series on ‘5 Acts of Devotion’ by talking about surrender. Next week is our Week of Prayer and I am sure that throughout the week the Holy Spirit is going to be challenging us as to who is on the throne in our hearts and are we willing to surrender.
In the words of John the Baptist, “He (Jesus) must become greater; I must become less.”
PRAY – Our prayer must be for immeasurably less of us, and immeasurably more of Him:
Be here, fully alive in the company of your creator,
Be quiet, fully resting in His peace,
Be still, fully released to the simplicity of waiting,
Be ready, fully aware of the power that is His.
We come, offering ourselves once again to His presence,
We kneel, offering our bodies in response to His rule,
We pause, offering our time to Him who designed it,
We focus, offering our thoughts to His wisdom. Amen.
Have a great day!
