I had to re-read todays passage a number of times to try and grasp what was going on in this chapter and to be honest I wondered: how can I get a daily devotion out of all this bloodshed.
What are you known as?
If I were making this chapter into a movie, there’d be a large cast. The armies of Israel and those of Sheba son of Bicri, but like any movie there’d be the lead actors and their roles would fall into the following categories:
The Troublemaker 2 Sam 20:1 There happened to be a troublemaker there named Sheba son of Bicri
The Procrastinator 2 Sam 20:4 4 Then the king told Amasa, “Mobilize the army of Judah within three days, and report back at that time.” 5 So Amasa went out to notify Judah, but it took him longer than the time he had been given.
The Enforcer 2 Sam 20:9 9 “How are you, my cousin?” Joab said and took him by the beard with his right hand as though to kiss him. 10 Amasa didn’t notice the dagger in his left hand, and Joab stabbed him in the stomach with it so that his insides gushed out onto the ground. Joab did not need to strike again, and Amasa soon died.
The Voice of Widsom 2 Sam 20:22 22 Then the woman went to all the people with her wise advice
Out of these few roles we find in our chapter today, I wonder which best describes you. Are you a troublemaker? Are you a procrastinator? Are you an enforcer? Out of these roles I believe God’s best for us would be to be a voice of wisdom.
How can you become known as a voice of wisdom in your spheres of influence?
