Our daily devotions in the lead up to Easter will support our Sunday teaching. We started our ‘Luke’s Easter’ series yesterday looking at Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. All our readings this week comes from Luke 19.
8 After telling this story, Jesus went on toward Jerusalem, walking ahead of his disciples. 29 As he came to the towns of Bethphage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives, he sent two disciples ahead. 30 “Go into that village over there,” he told them. “As you enter it, you will see a young donkey tied there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying that colt?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
What interests me in this passage is how people can be very bold when working under the word and call of God
Jesus asks the disciples to do something very specific:
“Go into that village over there,” he told them. “As you enter it, you will see a young donkey tied there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying that colt?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
The disciples, in Luke’s account, don’t answer back, or questions Jesus call, they just do it. I wonder what went through the donkey owners mind… Why are they untying my animal, why are they taking my animal? I also wonder why the words The Lord needs it appeased this owner?
So why was this donkey so important?
It wasn’t Jesus’s preferred mode of transport, this donkey was a fulfilment of Biblical prophecy:
Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem!
Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious,
yet he is humble, riding on a donkey— riding on a donkey’s colt.
The prophetic word of God isn’t formulaic.
We’ve seen a prophecy of Zechariah fulfilled in this donkey, a prophecy that was spoken hundreds of years earlier
But we’ve also seen the prophetic voice of Jesus which is spoken and then realised the same day as the disciples go and find the donkey Jesus said would be there.
Are there prophecies that have been spoken over you that you’ve shelved because they haven’t come to be yet. Remind yourself of them
Be open to the immediate prophetic work of God. God could speak to you today to do something today. Have your listening ears on and be open to that.
