Over the last two weeks we have been looking at some of things we need to do to grow as Christians.
About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose. The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!”
The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved —you and your household.” Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized. The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole household. (Acts 16 v 25 – 34)
This incident shows us clearly what it takes to become a Christian – repent of our sins and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and we will be saved! I wonder what Paul and Silas spoke about when they had a meal with the Jailer and his family. I think they would have been speaking about how the jailer and his family could grow as Christians now that they believed.
I remember when I first gave my life to Christ when I was 15 years old – I responded to an alter call and after the Pastor took me and others into his office and explained to us how we could grow as Christians now that we had been born again.
We can grow as Christians by – letting God talk to us through reading the Bible, talking to God through prayer, attending church regularly, being baptised, being filled with the Holy Spirit, telling others the good news of the Gospel, overcoming temptation, giving to God and finding the will of God for our lives.
Let’s put these principles into our lives.
Have a great day!
