The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (Colossians 1 v 15 – 17)
This passage not only shows us that Jesus makes God known to us but it goes on to say that Jesus is God Himself – it attributes to Jesus the attributes of God and unveils the doctrine of the Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit)
For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him
Again this is an amazing statement – you were created for God and not only that but everything around us is created for him. The whole universe belongs to Him and has been created for him. This world belongs to God, and yes we live in difficult times but nothing catches Jesus by surprise.
There is coming a day in which the Lord Jesus will have supremacy, a day when he will be Lord, and when “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow” (Philippians 2 v 10). What a glorious prospect this is for him – and for us.
In the words of the old hymn:
Jesus shall reign where’er the sun
Doth his successive journeys run;
His Kingdom stretch from shore to shore,
Till moon shall wax and wane no more
But important as is the prophetic application of these words, there is an equally important present, personal application, and that is our theme here.
The word “supremacy” as we have said means “holding the first place”. We are not thinking of the supremacy of one belief over another, one culture over another or one denomination over another, but of one personality over another.
The one personality is the Lord Jesus Christ and the other is you and I.
So, when we speak of the supremacy of Christ we mean Christ occupying the first place in our life. Is He first in our life, home, business, friendships, pleasures…?
Tomorrow we will look at why Jesus should be supreme but for today lets take a step back and ask the question – Does he hold first place?
Have a great day!
