Our God as Father Daily devotions
7 Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory.
Zephaniah 3:17 New Living Translation (NLT)
17 For the Lord your God is living among you.
He is a mighty savior.
He will take delight in you with gladness.
With his love, he will calm all your fears.[a]
He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”
I remember watching the movie, Hook when I was a kid, still to this day one of my favorite movies. In the film, grown up Peter returns to Neverland but has forgotten that he was Peter Pan when he was a child. A guy called Rufio had stepped up to be the new father figure for the lost boys in Peter’s absence. During the film, Pan remembers who he is and Rufio surrenders his leadership back to Pan. By the end of the movie, Rufio looks to Pan for acceptance and affirmation by fighting the infamous Hook. During this fight Rufio dies and says to Pan that he wishes that he was his Dad. Get the tissues, that bit always chokes me up!
The fact is, many of us like Rufio do things in the hope of gaining acceptance and the delight of our Dad. We may not have fought Captain Hook on a ship ridden with pirates but we all have done things in the hope of hearing our Dad say, “Well done!”.
When it comes to God, we innately behave in the same way. We believe that, to gain our Heavenly Dad’s acceptance and delight we must perform to earn it.
Today think what you have done to try to gain acceptance and delight from your earthly Dad. Did it work? Now read the Bible verses above and ask your Heavenly Dad how he feels about you.
