Without the Holy Spirit we would not be Christians. This is pointed out clearly in the following passages:
Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. (John 3 v 5)
he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, (Titus 3 v 5)
When Nicodemus came to Jesus by night Jesus taught him that if anyone wants to see the Kingdom of God he must be born again. This, Jesus made plain, is a work of the Spirit. (John 3 v 5) The same truth is emphasised by the Apostle Paul in Titus 3 v 5.
On the basis of these verses we sometimes say that the Holy Spirit is the agent in regeneration – that is to say he is the person at work in causing us to be born again. However, other Bible verses make it clear that, if the Spirit is the agent in regeneration, the Word of God is the instrument he uses to bring that regeneration about. 1 Peter 1 v 23 tells us that we have been:
For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
The truth of the matter is that we need both the Word and the Spirit in our Christian lives – they work together in balance. When you spend time reading God Word, the Bible, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and inspire you. Next time you are worshiping God by the Holy Spirit open your Bible and read a Psalm.
Be a man or woman or the Word and the Spirit.
Have a great day!
