|“Giving More than is Demanded”
(Going the extra mile)
“And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you,” (Matt 5:40-42 NIV).
We spoke about judgment yesterday. We judge when we don’t like something or someone.
On the other hand, we also recognise when someone has gone above and beyond
Maybe you’ve been in a restaurant and the service was beyond your expectation… you notice
The other week someone blessed the worship and set up teams with early morning coffee…. you notice
Someone offers to do something incredibly kind that helps you out of a bit of a hole… you notice
We notice when people go above and beyond, when they don’t settle for the bare minimum, but give their all. Jesus says: if you go one mile, go two.
Jesus is teaching contrary to the Jewish understanding of an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.
He’s saying, don’t react, but respond by going further
How can you go above and beyond?
Where do you need to go the extra mile?
This passage is particularly in reference to situations where there is conflict – how in your conflict, can you respond not with and eye for an eye, but by going the extra mile?
Father God, I want my life to be marked by going above and beyond.
Holy Spirit, help me to respond, not out of my flesh, by reacting and revenge, but by going further even in the presence of my enemies.
May my life honour you in all circumstances
In Jesus name, Amen
