Why should we do evangelism?
Daniel Ho defined evangelism as the sharing the good news of Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit and trusting God for the results. But why should we do this?
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
Sharing the good news of Jesus reflects God’s heart. God’s heart is to save people and not to condemn them.
The sad reality for those who have had an opportunity to believe in Jesus but chosen not to believe in Him stands as a stark contrast. God does not want anyone to be condemned, but this is what happens when people consciously reject Jesus.
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Sharing the good news of Jesus gives people the chance to escape from an eternity without Christ. Paul describes this situation in these verses as ‘the dominion of darkness’.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
Peter agrees with the previous passages from Paul and from John’s Gospel. God does not want anyone to perish. He does not want anyone to be separated from Him eternally. He wants everyone to turn around and come back to Him. He wants everyone to experience forgiveness.
Talking with other people about Jesus is not something that we have to do out of guilt, out of a sense of ticking a box or as a legalistic duty. God loves us, so we love God and want to reflect his heart. We have been saved, so we want others to be saved.
The question of ‘how’ to do evangelism can be debated. But the question of ‘why’ we should do evangelism has been answered in the Bible. Sharing the good news of Jesus reflects God’s heart that none should perish, but all should be saved.
